About Melbourne Conservation

Debra Parry is the managing conservator at Melbourne Conservation Services. Debra is a qualified conservator and has a Masters in Cultural Material Conservation from the University of Melbourne. She completed this qualification in November 2006 and was then awarded her Masters.

Debra gained extensive experience as an art and heritage conservator, before setting up Melbourne Conservation Services. Debra has previously worked for the National Archives of Australia, Heritage Victoria, the National Museum of Cambodia and the National Library of Laos.

Debra worked for six years as a conservator for the National Archives of Australia. While working as a conservator for the National Archives Debra carried out preservation work as well as intensive conservation treatment on a range of items. Intensive conservation includes repair and restoration of items so that they can be displayed and handled. Repair and restoration treatment has been performed on a range of items including paper documents, maps, plans, posters, photographs, photograph albums, volumes and ledgers, books, and other miscellaneous objects.

Debra worked for Heritage Victoria as a Heritage Care Officer. In the role of Heritage Care Officer Debra provided advice on preservation and storage to small museums and archives across Victoria. Debra travelled to many museums and archives to deliver preservation and conservation advice to staff and volunteers.

Debra also worked at the National Museum of Cambodia on their collection of glass plate negatives. She trained local staff in handling and care of the glass plate negative collection, and on storage of the collection. Debra carried out treatment on broken negatives, and photographed these for the museum.

In 2015 Debra worked on a project at the National Library of Laos. Debra carried out conservation repairs in the Rare Book Collection of the Library. Debra also trained staff in the preservation, care and storage of these books.

Melbourne Conservation carries out a range of art conservation on photographs, works of art on paper, books, documents, maps and plans, as well as ceramics and other objects. Melbourne Conservation provides preservation and conservation services to the public, to collectors, and to institutions.

Debra is a professional member of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM). Debra obtained her professional membership in May 2012. Debra continues to study conservation through attendance at conferences, and workshops. In September 2014 Debra attended a Master class in photographic conservation in Canberra.
